Protests Continue To Grow

It is estimated that 25,000 people marched in protest through the streets of San Francisco last night. Over 20,000 more protesters spilled into the streets of Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and even Modesto. These demonstrations were part of the ongoing struggle over passage of Proposition 8, the statewide ballot measure that bans same-sex marriage.

Popmuse and I joined one of the largest groups in Los Angeles. This time the march swelled with families, kids, and community supporters of the movement in the biggest turnout yet. The 12,500 chanting marchers converged about 6 p.m. at Sunset and Santa Monica boulevards in Silver Lake.

More protests supporting gay marriage are also popping up in Utah and New York.

Join The March For Civil Rights

I marched for my civil rights last night. I did it for my marriage, for the next generation, and because I am worthy of basic civil rights. Minorities rarely win their rights from a popular vote on election day. They win their rights from court decisions because it is the right and fair thing to do based on the constitution. Without these kinds of court decisions, we would still be racially segregated. It is important to bring attention to these movements to help create social change.

Thousands of gays and supporters of civil rights took to the streets yesterday in protest of Proposition 8 (the CA state amendment to the constitution that threatens to take marriage rights away from gay citizens). The march began at the gates of the Mormon church on Santa Monica Blvd, who funded the campaign against our civil rights with millions of dollars and "volunteers". Please come out and support equal rights with us!

A protest in Salt Lake City is planned: "If Jacob Whipple gets what he's hoping for, at least 1,000 Utahans will turn out Friday night to protest the involvement of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in helping pass Proposition 8, a California ballot measure that effectively killed, at least for now, same-sex marriages in that state. The call for people to gather at 6 p.m. at North Temple and State Street in Salt Lake City is to show solidarity with those protesting in California, Whipple explained."

I heard on tv this evening that organizers are estimating 20,000 marchers for this. I think everyone needs to take part in this. Even if just for an hour or so. Numbers matter, and I can't think of anything that would be more memorable, historical, or significant that doing this on one Saturday evening. Forget the dinner, the mall, the bar, the movie, the relaxing night at home. If you have to work, call in or leave early. Add yourself to this crowd. Invite all of your friends, your coworkers, neighbors. Make a party out of it."

Los Angeles Demands Gay Civil Rights

Popmuse and I just came home from from a historic rally that branched into citywide protests against Prop 8. Thousands of protesters filled the streets in a wave of bodies pushing their way through the streets of Los Angeles. It has been an amazing night full of chanting and marching with police and news media circusing around the effort. The main information I took away from the rally is that couples married before the proposition will not lose their rights. Also, it is the belief of many legal strategists that if passed the proposition may still be overturned by the state supreme court.

There will be another protest rally and press conference Thursday Nov. 6th @ 2pm. It will take place in West LA front of the Mormon church at Santa Monica Blvd and Selby. Please come to show your support for Gay Marriage Rights!

A Note From Bloghungry

This morning I woke up to find that my marriage was legally taken away from me by California voters. I'd like to give my deepest thanks to all that voted no on Proposition 8. To everyone else, I ask you to think about the fact that you were willing to take legal rights away from a group of people because you see them as unacceptable or undeserving. What kind of world are you trying to make?

Smores Brownies

This marriage of brownies and smores is so right that even California voters can't deny its union. You must try these brownies. They put all others to shame.

Smores Brownies

Crust:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 cups crushed graham cracker crumbs
2 tablespoons sugar
Pinch fine salt

Brownie:
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1 cup packed light brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
4 large cold eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour

Topping:
4 cups large marshmallows

Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and heat oven to 325 degrees F. Line an 8 by-8-inch square baking pan with foil so it hangs over the edges by about 1 inch.

For the crust: Lightly butter the foil with some of the melted butter. Stir the rest of the butter together with the crumbs, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Press the crumb mixture evenly over the bottom of the pan. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the brownie. Put the butter and chocolate in a medium microwave safe bowl. Melt in the microwave on 75 percent power for 2 minutes. Stir, and microwave again until completely melted, about 2 minutes more. Alternatively, put the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Bring a saucepan filled with 1 inch or so of water to a very slow simmer; set the bowl on the pan without touching the water. Stir occasionally until melted. Stir the light brown and white sugars, vanilla and salt into the melted chocolate. Add the eggs and beat vigorously to make a thick and glossy batter. Add the flour and stir until just incorporated.

Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake until the top is crispy and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out mostly clean, with a few crumbs, about 40 to 45 minutes.

Remove from the oven and carefully position a rack about 6 inches from the broiler and preheat on low. Layer marshmallows across the top and toast under the broiler until golden, (keep an eye on it, it can go quick), about 2 minutes. Cool on a rack, gently removing the brownies from the pan using the aluminum flaps. Carefully separate any marshmallow from the foil and fold away. Cut into 12 (2-inch) squares.
