Now that I'm 30 and a father, I've decided to take better care of my health. So I've latched on to the advice of kooky food science guy Alton Brown and his new healthy lifestyle. He drinks this smoothie for breakfast regularly and says it's great balance of protein, vitamins, and antioxidants. More importantly it's tasty and easy to throw together in the morning. He also gave great advice about buying bags of frozen fruit and peeling and freezing your own bananas in ziplock bags to keep them fresh, cheap, and readily available. He measures each ingredient to 4oz on a digital scale, but that's 1/2 cup by volume and who can deal with science first thing in the morning.
Alton's Smoothie Recipe
1/2 cup plain, low-fat soy milk
1/2 cup acai, grape, or pomegranate juice
1/2 cup frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup frozen peaches or mangos
Combine the soy milk, juice, banana, strawberries, blueberries, and the peaches in the blender. Start at the lowest speed and slowly accelerate to medium, until you achieve a vortex. Blend on medium for 1 minute. Increase the speed to high and blend for an additional minute. Serve immediately.
I haven't had a smoothie in years. Who can keep up with what is and isn't healthy now?
